Why you entered the Walmart Green Student Challenge?
As a group, we like to stretch ourselves and take on new challenges. Sustainability in business is a topic that is important to each of us in different ways. Understanding that businesses today and in the future need to implement practices more harmonious with our environment, we decided to take a real stab at a solution to the problem. The Walmart Green Student Challenge has given us the forum to use our skills and test our ideas in front of a panel of experts. We hope we'll see five great ideas put into action as a result!

What will you do with the $30,000 if you win?
Undecided. We'll have to win it first before we make serious plans.

Who would win in an all out Canadian animal showdown and why: Canada goose, beaver or a moose?
We agree that the Moose is the obvious choice because of its size, power, and speed, however recognizing the relative strengths of its opponents; we would like to consider contextual factors when making our decision. In typical MBA style, our answer is: It depends. For instance the beaver is a planner and if it had enough time it could probably figure out how to beat one of the others. Of course, geese may have an advantage just by their sheer number.

MARK DESJARDINE
– UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN ONTARIO, THE RICHARD IVEY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Mark R. DesJardine
Hometown: Peterborough, ON
Major: PhD Student in Strategy & Sustainability

Why you entered the Walmart Green Student Challenge?
Besides the fact that sustainability is right up my alley, I believe in the power of a single good idea. Look at Walmart's new environmental demonstration store in Burlington, ON: geothermal heating and cooling, 100% renewable energy sourcing, low-flow bathroom fixtures, smart indoor and outdoor lighting, heat recycling, reflective roofing, and improved insulation—among others, these are all individual ideas that will shape the future of Canadian business and our environment. A single good idea can change business and our future; I believe I have the next great sustainability idea.

What will you do with the $30,000 if you win?
Because I'm a true believer in both sustainability and my idea, I plan to spend a significant portion of this money strictly to fund my business proposal. Once the benefits are realized, I expect businesses will be quick to accept my proposal, however, the money will play a critical role in these initial stages.

Who would win in an all out Canadian animal showdown and why: Canada goose, beaver or a moose?
Hands-down, I choose the moose. Besides their short brown hair and broad six-foot stature, the moose is a solitary character that can handle its challenges singlehandedly. Unlike the goose it copes with the harsh Canadian winters and, unfortunately for the beaver, moose is the Algonquin term for "twig eater"… sorry about your home beaver. And yes, in case you were wondering, my hair is brown and I'm 6' 3".

Who would win in an all out Canadian animal showdown and why: Canada goose, beaver or a moose? Here, at the University of Waterloo, it is the Canadian geese who rule our campus. From our first-hand experience, they are not to be messed with.

Major: Business Administration

Why you entered the Walmart Green Student Challenge?
My friend told me about the challenge, and I had an idea in mind so I decided to go for it!

What will you do with the $30,000 if you win?
The first thing I would do is pay off all my student debt! The rest I would use on my exchange to Sydney, Australia.

Who would win in an all out Canadian animal showdown and why: Canada goose, beaver or a moose?
I would have to say the moose, because it's bigger and stronger than the other two! If i was ever face-to-face with a beaver or a goose I wouldn't mind. But a moose would be another story,..

Why you entered the Walmart Green Student Challenge?
We entered the Walmart Green Student Challenge, because our professor, Dr. Sherry Finney, brought the contest to our attention in our sustainable marketing class. She issued the Student Challenge as a group assignment to our entire class, as it was fitting to the course and its material. Our group felt that it would be a once in a lifetime experience to actually develop an idea that would enhance sustainability in business.

What will you do with the $30,000 if you win?
If our team were to win the $30,000, we would split it up and some of us would use it to pay off current debt, for future graduate education, or possibly a business venture.

Who would win in an all out Canadian animal showdown and why: Canada goose, beaver or a moose?
In an all out Canadian animal showdown, we clearly think that the beaver would win. This is because of its ability to chew through trees, which could potentially fall on the moose. Also, it has the ability to swim, and surprise the goose from underneath the water, therefore, winning the Canadian forest animal showdown.
